It is a type of chelating agent also called edetic acid and etheylenediaminetetraacetic acid. Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) is a synthetic, odorless, water-soluble powder that has many uses in soaps and other personal care products: Complexing agent: EDTA removes unwanted metal ions and reduces water hardness. Stabilizer: EDTA can stabilize soaps and bleach in fabric washing powders. Preservative enhancer: EDTA can enhance the action of preservatives in some liquid products. Chelator: EDTA "grabs" metal ions that can affect the stability and appearance of cosmetic products.
