α-Olefin sulfonates also known as Alfa Olefin Sulphonate are a group of anionic surfactants, which are used as detergents.The compounds contain a - mostly linear, primary - alkyl R and a monovalent cation M, preferably sodium.The most frequently used example of this group of substances is sodium α-olefin sulfonate. Alfa Olefin Sulphonate are commonly used in shampoos and other bath products owing to its skin-friendly properties, cleansing and foaming properties, and ability to combine well with water to remove dirt and oils. Petroleum cracking is the most common method for producing it in large quantities.

Cleaning and personal care products : AOS is used in detergents, soaps, shampoos, bubble baths, hand washes, face washes, and body washes. It's a major or secondary surfactant that can create thick, fluffy bubbles and give products a rich, creamy texture. AOS is also effective at cleaning skin without stripping it of its natural oils, and it's resistant to hard water.

Textile, printing, and dyeing industries : AOS is used in these industries.
Petrochemical industry : AOS has applications in the petrochemical industry.
Other uses: AOS can also be used as an industrial foaming agent, wetting agent, concrete density improver, and pesticide emulsifier. It can also be used in emulsion polymerization and for conditioning concrete and mortar.
